History
Here is a little summary of what all this “Pink Ribbon” stuff is all about.
For several years, many of us participated in a fund raiser called “Ride for the Cure” that was held on the first weekend of October at Bong Recreation area, near Burlington. It was run by a gal named Lynn Miller Dietrich and it was a great time… for a great cause. Lynn hosted that ride for at least 6 years and brought in thousands of dollars each year for breast cancer research.
In 2003, several HON members went to that ride along with Suzanne Daniels, one of our members who had been diagnosed with breast cancer 6 months earlier. We rode with Suzanne at that ride and we were all hopeful that Suzanne’s courage to fight the disease would get her through the battle. The cancer spread to her bones, though, and Suzanne died in May, 2004. Many HONS continued to attend that ride as a memorial to Suzanne until the organizer decided to call it quits.
In 2009, the owners of Kettle Moraine Ranch (across from the Southern Kettle Moraine State Park Hwy S trailhead) graciously allowed us to use their facility, thus beginning a renewal of the Hags on Nags Pink Ribbon Ride for the Cure!
Who are the Hags on Nags?
“Hags on Nags” was created in June of 2002 by a handful of women who decided to greet middle age by reclaiming their common passion for horses. As horse lovers who had found themselves “saddled” with family and work responsibilities, they were determined to make time for themselves. In a few short months, membership grew to include women of all ages and from all walks of life that continue to find common ground in their love of horses and close friendships.
With members tired of rules and responsibilities, “Hags on Nags” is a loosely organized, non-profit group whose main purpose is to have fun and “be there” for each other. We plan monthly events including trail riding, parades, overnight camping trips, benefit rides, tack sales, movies and social events, clinics and even our own little fun show, Hag-mania. Instead of by-laws and officers, we have a favorite poem and a timeless essay to guide us.
Visit the Hags on Nags website for more information about our members, events, campouts and how you too can join in the fun!
